LIESA is the Independent League of Special Group Samba Schools of Rio de Janeiro (Liga Independente das Escolas de Samba do Grupo Especial do Rio de Janeiro), or the league formed by the top or "special" group of samba clubs that put on the spectacular parades in Rio's infamous Sambadrome. Currently, the top 12 samba schools make up the special group and compete annually for these positions in their annual carnaval parade in the sambadrome.
