Jonia McClenney is a Brazilian is dancer from Recife in Brazil who is best known for dancing and teaching and samba and other dancers, as well as founding and running the Raiz Brazil Dance Company at the Athletic Garage Dance Center in Los Angeles.

Early Life

Jonia was born in Recife, state of Pernambuco, Brazil. She started folkd dancing at the age of 4.

Samba Work

Jonia moved to the United States in ???. She has trained in Jazz, Ballet, Contemporary and Hip Hop in Brazil, and also in Los Angeles at the EDGE, Millennium and Athletic Garage Dance Center.

She has performed in every major Samba group in Los Angeles area, dancing with "Girls from Ipanema" for Aretha Franklin in her Concerts, and has also danced in the Hollywood Bowl, Fox Theater in Detroit, Energy Theater in Detroit, and Ceasar's Palace in Las Vegas. She also danced for "Extravadancers" performing with well-known Brazilian artists such as Sergio Mendes, Seu Jorge, and Bebel Gilberto.

Jonia has been teaching Samba for the last 15 years, including also workshops in Los Angeles, San Diego, Santa Barbara and recently in the Triple Treat Dance Convention. She also has been training dancers that want to learn how to perform Brazilian Samba, in her Raiz Brazil Dance Company, where she trains her dancers during a 32 hour course, including a samba performance course giving the dancers stage training.

From 2009-2012, Jonia was Rainha da Bateria (Percussion Queen) for SambaLa Samba School and in 2016, Jonia won the Rainha do Samba in the United States.

Personal Life

Jonia is married to an American and has two daughter and currently lives and works in the Los Angeles.
