David de Hilster is founder and president of SambaLá Samba School, event producer, and samba singer and percussionist from the United States. He is best known for being founder of SambaLá Samba School, Unidos do Mundo 2000 and 2001, the Brazilian Street Carnaval of Long Beach, producing two years of the Brazilian Day in Los Angeles, and for being the first non-portuguese samba singer to sing in Rio's famed Sambadrome. David is married to Brazilian clothes and costume designer Doris de Hilster.

Music Beginnings
David started taking piano lessons at 8 years old and was playing Mozart by age ten. He also took up trumpet at age 9, playing in the marching band in high school, pit orchestra, and excelled at music theory where he was the only student without perfect pitch to get all dictations correct during an entire year of theory. David continued to play trumpet at his church and piano as a hobby.

Brazil
In 1979, David's family was a backup family for a foreign exchange student from Brazil and ended up traveling to Brazil the same year where David fell in love with the culture and music of Brazil. After visiting one more time in 1984, David returned to the United States to finish his masters degree in Linguistics and computers, finished a research project, sold everything, and moved to Rio de Janeiro. There he found a job at an artificial intelligence company where he met his wife at a alpine climbing club. David married Doris de Hilster in 1989 and they moved to the United States in 1990 where David found a job in California.

During his almost 3 years in Brazil, David never went to a samba school or played music.

Samba
In 1992, David and his wife moved to Long Beach California into an artist studio where David painted at night, working in computer research during the day. His wife Doris started Samba Collection, starting her own line of clothing and selling it in her store. David has his first art show with much of his art being computer and Brazilian themed and had his first radio interview on the Brazilian show Sounds of Brazil with Sergio Mielniczenko.

In 1993, the couple went to see the annual gay and lesbian parade which gave David the idea to start a samba school in Long Beach given Long Beach allowed such a "raucous" or wild parade. In March of 1994, in his wife store on Pine Avenue in Long Beach, a document was signed to start SambaLá Samba School. The name was chosen by one of the participants as being easy to say in English and still have meaning to Brazilians. The ending "La" means there in Portuguese translating "samba there" and "La" also could be said in English as "Samba LA" for Samba in Los Angeles.

At this time, David neither sang or played samba. Since there were no samba singers in the school at the time, David, who could carry a tune, was the only one who could sing with a cavaquinho (small stringed instrument) and so thus, he became the first "puxador" or samba singer for the group. David also learned to play the surdo, the big base drum. The story goes that David hired a Rio native to teach samba to his school and after 5 minutes of playing, the teacher grabbed David's mallet and said there was no hope for him. That only made David try harder and he learned to play 3rd or solo surdo and even plays some cavaquinho today.

In the year 2000, David became the first and only non-Portuguese singer to sing in the famed sambadrome in Rio de Janeiro where he sang with Neguinho da Beija-Flor in David's project Unidos do Mundo where David also sang in rehearsal with Bethe Carvalho.

In the early days David also has also learned to dance samba from the numerous samba instructors through the years.

Music Director
With David's music background, he has been the music director of Samba School through the years. Knowing how to read music and having studied with some of the best percussion teachers in the United States and in Brazil, David has learned the intricacies of a samba drum corps and routinely directs the SambaLá bateria during parades and shows. David also has been played with some professional groups and musicians including Beck (2012), Monobloco (from Brazil- 2013), Richard Elfman (Oinga-Boinga), Pancho Sanchez (2000), and sang with Neguinho da Beija-Flor and Beth Carvalho, to name a few.

Event Producer
A caixa is a unique Brazilian instrument that is played with two modern wooden drum sticks and has metal cables or strings on that run across one head to give it a "snare drum" sound. They come in different forms including different numbers of strings, different head sizes, and different heights.

Playing Positions
The caixa can be played in two positions: vertical and horizontal. The horizontal method is the most common and uses a a drum strap allowing both hands to be free. The vertical position is less popular and requires an upraised arm that cradles the caixa vertically, with the strap wrapped around the drum with one hand fixed and hitting while holding the drum in a very fixed way, while the other arm is free to hit the drum head, often above and below the strings.

It is important while playing not to hit the strings in order to keep from eventually breaking the strings. Replacing strings quickly during parades cannot happen and during samba parades that last well over an hour, it is imperative not to break the strings.
Unidos do Mundo is a samba school which periodically forms in Rio de Janeiro in order to parade members from samba schools from around the world. The first parade was in 2000 taking place in the Sambadrome as the opening for the Parade of Champions in Rio celebrating the millennium.

History
The project was started by David de Hilster in 1998 while running the website , he started contacting samba schools around the world about meeting in the year 2000 in Rio de Janeiro. In the beginning, there were no plans as to what would happen in Rio. After a failed attempt in 1998 with carnaval people in Rio, de Hilster contacted the webmaster of the official wesbite for LIESA (the League of Samba Schools of Rio de Janeiro) about the foreign samba school's desire to meet in Rio. The webmaster Alessandra Pirotelli liked the idea and thus, Unidos do Mundo was born.

Alessandra prepared a project to be presented to Brazil's cultural department in the country's capital Brasilia about forming an international samba school and parading in the Sambadrome as the opening for the day of the champions in Rio's famed Sambadrome and the project was not only funded, it was the only millennial cultural project to be given a standing ovation.

2000
From 1998 until early March of 2000, preparations were made designing costumes, floats, and the all important samba theme song. The international samba schools picked Martinho da Vila to write the samba theme song (samba enredo) for Unidos do Mundo. Organizing through the internet, the members bought their plane tickets, paid a fee to help with costume expenses, and weeks before the parade, starting arriving in Rio.

Fundição Progresso, a large cultural space in downtown Rio served as the practice space (quadra) for the school where both gringos and Brazilians gathered to create the first ever international samba school in Brazil. Practices also took place at Beija-Flor Samba School in Nilopolis.

Parade of Champions
On March 9, 2000, Unidos do Mundo entered the Sambadrome and paraded for over an hour, filling the entire runway with the energy and talents of sambistas from around the world.

Celebrity Participation
Numerous samba celebrities voluntarily participated in the project including Neiguinho da Beija-Flor, Beth Carvalho, Carlinhos de Jesus, and Martinha da Vila to name a few. Beija-Flor Samba School also lent its bateria directors and quadra in Nilopolis as a practice space for Unidos do Mundo.

Producers
The key people involved in the event were David de Hilster (founder and international director), Alessandra Pirotelli (national director), Pavão (carnavaleso), the Brazilian Department of Culture, Beija-Flor Samba School, and Fundição Progresso.

2001
A smaller less ambitious Unidos do Mundo took place in the year 2001 when members from Samba School and the London School of Samba gathered for workshops and a parade in Rio. This time, the parade was in downtown Rio de Janeiro.

2020
David de Hilster is spearheading a movement to make Unidos do Mundo an annual event alternating in Rio and Sao Paulo. The plans will be announced in the summer of 2017. Where the practice will take place and where the group will parade is yet to be determined. Everything will be announced and coordinated via the Unidos do Mundo website.

A traditional samba school is a community organization made up of mostly non-professionals who work year round on parading their members in a annual carnaval parade with a percussion unit, singers and musicians, dancers, floats, and many colorful costumes, largely based on the samba school in Brazil. The vast majority of samba groups outside of Brazil are not considered to be samba schools in the traditional sense.

Origin of the Term
There are various conflicting versions of just how the world samba "school" came about. One version is that the first samba club met near a school and directions to that club included the world "school" or "escola" in Portuguese. The words "samba" and "school" as the story goes then became synonymous with the samba club itself which did teach its members to dance and play samba. But this story is not substantiated.

Today, the term "samba school" is often misused by groups or instructors who teach samba dance and or percussion, but are not "samba schools" in the "traditional" sense.

Points of Contention
Many groups outside of Brazil label themselves as samba schools although they are not samba schools in the tradition of what Brazilians define to be samba schools. This practice is not isolated to groups themselves, but is often used by show promoters. Promoters will often gather musicians, dancers, and costumes to make up the components of a samba school and then promote them as such. The reason groups and promoters outside of Brazil use the word "samba school" for their shows, events, or groups, is to "entice" the audience into thinking they are going to see a performance like those in Brazil. These performances however necessarily lack the cohesiveness, unity, and energy of samba schools. One of the most important facts about samba schools are the fierce loyalty and love one feels for their school. This only happens after many years of participation, dedication, and work put into the production of year samba parades which is a requirement for any traditional samba school.

There are very few samba groups outside of Brazil that can truly be called a samba school, with the majority of them in Japan and Finland where there exists leagues or organized groups of traditional samba schools.

Minimum Requirements
Most samba groups outside of Brazil are either dance groups, percussion groups, or blocos. Blocos are less organized groups that are missing crucial components of a samba school but in Brazil, can often group to become samba schools.

The minimum requirements for a traditional samba school must be done annually and are as follows:

* Pick a theme
* Write samba enredo (samba theme song) about that theme
* Create costumes in accordance with the theme
* Must contain the following groups: bateria, cavaquinho and puxadores (samba singers), baianas, porta-bandeira and mestre-sala (flag bearer and ballroom master), commissao de frente, numerous alas or costumes groups open to public e community participation.
* Construct and parade floats (this is not an absolute requirement given the limited resources of samba schools outside of Brazil but is aspired by all traditional samba school)
* Parade publicly

Competition
It is even more rare outside of Brazil to hold samba school competitions given there are so few samba schools. The only two places where samba school competitions exist today are in Japan and Finland.

Competitions can be made up of samba school groups which will parade and compete separately, with the top of a lower group being elevated to the next group while last place in a higher group, descends to the group below. The only lace this practice is happening outside of Brazil is in Japan.

The groups are normally ordered as they are in Brazil:
* Special Group (top group)
* Access Group or Group A (second group)
* Group B
* Group C
* Group D

It should be noted since group "A" starts with a the first letter of "Accesso" or "Access", "Group A" and "Access Group" are interchangeable.
